Surfacing and Canadian Songstress

Original works on by Sharon W. Huget and Joyelle Brandt

SURFACING
By Sharon W. Huget

 Surfacing.
Of Being.
Suspended.
Vulnerable. Resilient.
Evolving. Emerging. Origins.
Beyond.
Being.

At times, for me, the experience of painting is an attempt to visually articulate what is intuited but not fully grasped. Painting not what I know, but rather what is unknown.
In this exhibit, “Surfacing”, I invite you to be suspended for a moment in visual narratives beyond words.
Cerulean Emergence I, II, II is a visual exploration of the inner world. The place where I reside in what is both a familiar and unfamiliar interior landscape. A held space for presence. Who am I and who am I becoming?

These are the ageless ponderings that linger, unresolved and suspended.  It is a kind of emergence – already fully present and yet still evolving. Using colour and texture to express openness and vulnerability, the images that emerge invite the viewer to explore inner truths.

Referencing elements of antiquity, my work continues to allude to how artifacts and architecture are touchstones to history and distant memories.

Referencing elements of antiquity, my work continues to allude to how artifacts and architecture are touchstones to history and distant memories. Semi abstract forms and loose architectural renderings suggest a portal between time and space. Using mixed drawing, graphite and acrylic paint media, the visual narratives  express a sense of vulnerability juxtaposed with immutable permanence.

Ancient columns and incomplete arches suggest that something of the human experience remains regardless of whether it remains to be remembered or forgotten.

"Lately I have been thinking about history, about whose stories are told, and how women’s stories are often absent from the version of history we are taught. I wanted to do something to change that, but I have absolutely no interest or talent in historical research.

So I started thinking about my own personal history, about the women who have made a difference in my life.

Have you ever noticed how when a particular song comes on the radio it can transport you back in time with such intensity that you can smell it, taste it, feel it?

We each have a collection of songs that become the soundtrack to our lives. This collection is as unique as your fingerprint, and it tells the story of you. I wanted to tell a story with these paintings about the lives of Canadian women, about my life. Each song has moved me, inspired me, made me dance, made me cry. These songs have carried me through hard times and helped me celebrate joyous times. They have become inextricable interwoven with my memories, part of the fabric of my life."

"This collection is my love letter to the women of Canadian music. May they continue to touch our hearts with their voices, and may they know that their talent and hard work has made a difference."
